What twin and adoption studies actually show

Epigenetics: a third piece of the puzzle
A newer strand of research, epigenetics, looks at how environment can switch genes on or off without changing the underlying DNA sequence itself. Chronic early stress, for instance, has been linked to changes in how certain stress-response genes are expressed, with knock-on effects on attention and learning. This adds yet another layer of nuance to the debate: it's not simply "genes" versus "environment" as two separate boxes, but a genuinely interactive system where each one shapes how the other gets expressed over a child's development.
What this means day to day
For a parent, the practical takeaway isn't "it's all genetic, so there's nothing to do," nor "it's all environment, so every point is earnable through effort." It's closer to: genes set a plausible range, and environment has a real say in where within that range a child ends up.
